Especially when it’s funny

*Note: This blog entry originally ran in August of 2011, but it’s worth sharing again!

Travelling back from a pleasant hike at Robbers Cave in Wilburton, Oklahoma, I chose to avoid the interstate.  Instead, I drove through little towns I had never seen before, eyes peeled for signs of wonder and inspiration.

I would not be disappointed.

As I cruised down main street in Wewoka, Oklahoma, I witnessed a perplexing moment of worlds colliding.

Out of the passenger side window, I beheld a Native American man dressed in fine cowboy attire, complete with bolo tie.  He sat on the concrete next to a car vacuum canister at a car wash…holding the reigns of his horse!

I did not see him vacuum the horse.  He was just sitting next to the vacuum canister holding the reigns of his horse, with his equine companion positioned where you would expect to see a car.  This quick snapshot captured my attention.  And we locked eyes as he noticed me ogling him.

So, I took the next right and drove around to the car wash parking lot in hopes of capturing this unique moment with my camera.  As I pulled into the back entrance of the car wash, I found him leading the horse away.  The moment had passed.

What does this mean?  I’m not quite sure.  Had I caught him actually vacuuming the horse or riding it through the car wash, the humor and the point of this story would be amped up several degrees!  As it is, I’m left to wonder if this car wash was his destination or if he was just passing through.

Nonetheless, I think there is a lesson or a reminder here about worlds and cultures colliding.  Perhaps the take away is an application about life transitions or the peril or the beauty of old and new ways competing.
Or maybe we’ll just smile and let it be.
