Settling into Renewal

After a long day, mind frazzled, body exhausted, where do you ease into rest? Perhaps your “chair” is actually a sofa, couch, or bed. But many of us have a sacred space for renewal.

I bought my leather recliner in 2002, the year my daughter was born. We got a new living room as a thank you to my wife for putting me through graduate school. So, it’s getting old.

This chair is a place of comfort, repose, and relaxation. Some of my best naps have taken place in this chair, holding my son or daughter when they were young. Or, drifting off to sleep in front of a football game. On Sunday nights, I ease into my chair for baseball therapy. Sometimes, I reach for a magazine or a book. On snowy days, I sit in my chair by the fireplace listening to classical music. Early on Sunday mornings, I sit in this chair to read the newspaper. I love my chair.

So, what is your sacred resting space? Where do you collapse for renewal?

Your space probably carries memories of naps, babies, and rest. When you ease into your chair, you most likely experience a programmed sense of de-stressing. Perhaps you feel as though nothing can bother you or touch you in your chair.

Granted, we all need to live active lifestyles and too much time in the “chair” can become its own problem. But even for the active, a favorite chair constitutes a necessary element of life.

May you settle in for renewal today.
