To flabbergast means to make a strong impression on someone with something unexpected. Usually, we might say that we were flabbergasted to hear that she quit college, or that he has two girlfriends at age 96, or something equally amazing or alarming.

Could it be, though, that you have lived long enough and seen it all and have ceased to be flabbergasted by anything? Not surprised by anything. Wouldn’t put anything past anybody? Perhaps overly cynical?

Can you remember the last time you laughed so hard you cried? Or, cried so hard you laughed? Do you recall the last time your eyes involuntarily widened and you couldn’t hide the look of horror on your face?

Re open yourself to being flabbergasted. Or, try flabbergasting someone else!

Disclaimer: I’m not even sure you can intentionally do this.

But moments of flabbergastation (that really should be a word) typically turn into memorable moments and good stories. So, is there a way to re open yourself to wonder, shock, and amazement…even if you’re well experienced in life?

I think so. And, your system needs this kind of jolt of life every now and then. Here are some ideas for opening yourself back up to the world around you.

  • Go to a public place and people watch. But, don’t be creepy about it.
  • Watch the children in church.
  • Pray silently for the next 3 people you see to receive some type of unexpected blessing.

I hope you get flabbergasted!
