Reflections from Black Mesa
The scene unfolded before me as I leaned back in my camping chair. Near dusk, my 10 year old son cast a line into the creek in front of our campsite. As he deliberately managed the reel, an industrious beaver swam down the middle of the creek unaware of his presence until another cast landed the bait 20 feet in front of his path.
Dipping underwater immediately, the beaver’s change of plans prompted two bullfrogs to comment in deep croaks and begin a conversation that played throughout the night.
Earlier that afternoon, we cooled off in this murky creek. It felt good to wash off the bug spray, suntan lotion and sweat that had lathered up during our 8 mile hike to the high point of Oklahoma. Granted, 4973 elevation is not much to brag about. But two days camping at the very end of the panhandle of Oklahoma in desolately beautiful land with my son…this was time well spent.
Listening and watching.
