-Excerpt from my new book, Thrive Anyway
Kathy and I awoke on the first day of the 2014 Myositis National Conference in Reno, Nevada to find hundreds of hot air balloons outside our hotel window. Unexpected Blessing #1.
On a whim three days later, we rented an extremely small rental car to drive an hour into the Sierra Nevada Mountain range to see Lake Tahoe. While we gained an immense amount of helpful information at the conference, the lazy drive, dining, shopping, and stunning views around Lake Tahoe was a second unexpectedly wondrous bonus of the trip. Even if we were in a humorously small mini car.
Unexpected Blessing #3. Several years ago, I was on my way to speak at a caregiving seminar at a local university. Unfortunately, I was in a bad mood. Therefore, I swung through Starbucks looking for a “pick me up.” Much to my surprise, I experienced an immediate day changer. As I approached the drive-thru window, the barista informed me that the lady in front of me did random acts of kindness in her father’s memory each year on his birthday, even though he had passed on. She had paid for my coffee! This instant joy was matched as I offered to pay for the person behind me.
Similar experiences are awaiting you! Whether you run into old friends in unexpected locations or take brief ice cream runs with your beloved that turn into meaningful conversations, blessings await. When they happen, simply receive and be grateful.
Worth Repeating
The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings.
