Finding Value in Past, Present and Future
What have you done? Guilt, pride, remorse, acceptance, longing, gratitude and more probably stir around your thoughts of the past. So, let’s focus in for a moment.
In the context of a current challenge, look back. How have you gotten through similar struggles before? Are there common elements to the problem? Could some of the same strategies be used this time? If you made it through before, don’t you think you can make it through this time? Did you mess up in the past? Of course. But for now, focus on taking the good and leaving the bad behind.
She cared for her father-n-law, who had Alzheimer’s. For seven years. Not long after his passing, her husband was also diagnosed. Her road was filled with difficulty and challenge that she did not want, but she did utilize tools and knowledge from the first round in the second. Sure, she did some things wrong the first time, and she determined to learn from her mistakes this time. Most importantly, even though she did not want to do this again, she knew that she could do it. And she did.
Take a moment to look back. Ask yourself these questions:
- How did I make it through?
- What helped?
- Whose guidance or assistance made a difference?
Looking back, you may find guidance for your current challenges from how you survived previously. You are resilient. You are courageous. You can do this!
