Rest and Mirth

Generous friends lent us use of their expansive cabin on Lake Eufaula in Eastern Oklahoma a few weekends ago. And it rained.

But not a stormy rain. Just a nice, steady, soul-cleansing shower. The kind that helps you find your equilibrium.

Ukulele tunes and the sweet voice of my daughter blended elegantly with the pattering of precipitation. We rested. We listened. We stilled our thoughts.

Next door, a group of young dads were on a getaway. One of them lost or won a bet, I think. Into the soggy, 50 degree afternoon, we heard an eruption of laughter and grunts. Then, one of the guys bolted down the lawn, across the dock, and into the lake. His bravery turned to shrieking and scrambling back to the dock. More jeers and cheers. We went outside and joined in the cheering.

Rest had cleared the way for mirth. And, we reveled in it.

May you soon experience the deep joy of a good rest that leads to laughter.

Worth Repeating

With mirth and laughter let old wrinkles come.

-William Shakespeare
