Unlikely moments of hope #1

He knew the truth. So did she.

They both heard what the doctor said. They had both read the reports and the prognosis.

The cancer was back. Wide spread. And their time was short. Too short.

Sitting there together, the life had been sucked out of the room. Neither one knew what to say. They considered themselves ready, but ready seemed like the least appropriate word at this moment.

So many years together…child rearing, losing a child, vacations, dates, spiritual breakthroughs, good years, bad years, but mostly good. They still had plans this early into retirement.

He looked at her with desperate eyes and wondered aloud, “Do you think we’ll still be able to take the kids and grandkids to the beach next summer?”

She knew that next summer was outside the timetable they had just been given. But now was no time to squash hope, it was time to create hope.

“Yes,” she smiled, “yes, I’ll call today and reserve the condo.”

Yes. That word created a picture in his mind, a goal, a mission, an anchor of hope. Instantly, he could smell the ocean breeze, see the grandchildren playing in the surf, hear the sweet voice of his daughter beside him on the balcony. Yes, he would walk the beach one more time with his lovely wife, his best friend, his giver of hope.

Yes. Just the word those wet, desperate eyes needed to see roll off her smiling lips.

Worth Repeating
Never deprive anyone of hope; it might be all they have.
