Holiday Sightings #3
The holidays hang thick in the air,
Carols, cocoa, and Christmas parties,
Hustling and bustling to get it all done.
But in the frantic joy of the season,
I also catch regular glimpses of the struggling,
Those short on cash and hope.
She waits with her infant child,
On a bus stop bench in the cold,
With eyes that tell a long, heart wrenching story.
He empties his basket at the checkout line,
Of carefully selected economy items,
And pays with small bills and coins.
The kids drive in for a few days and discover,
That dementia is taking up residence in their childhood home,
And so the plans and calls for a major change begin.
Alongside the parties and gifts and festive outings,
Many will also share of their resources, time, and expertise,
To enter into shared humanity with the struggling.
Worth Repeating
If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
