Behind the Scenes of Caregiving #2

When you spend time in the desert, you savor every drop of water.

The experience of caregiving offers no lack of hardship, disillusionment, and grief. Yet, beautiful gestures, hilarious incidents, and pride generating accomplishments also happen along the way.

Perhaps you can identify with these 7 not-so-small victories in caregiving:

  1. The first time you acknowledged your fears to yourself and released what you were bottling up inside.
  2. Going to the counselor, opening up to a trusted confidant, or seeking assistance from someone who is there to help.
  3. Joining friends for a meal. Simple as it may seem, this is a huge step.
  4. Standing up for your caree.
  5. Standing up for yourself.
  6. Engaging in an act of self-careā€¦the early ones when you still feel guilt, and the later ones when you realize unnecessary guilt has dissipated.
  7. Realizing you can use your experience to help others along their path.

You can probably think of many more not-so-small victories from your own experience, but these 7, subtle as they may seem, represent major breakthroughs on the path of the caregiver.

Worth Repeating
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.
