People You Notice #3
Sitting in the waiting area, I settled in to an uncomfortable session of pre-appointment fidgeting and boredom. Waiting rooms are kind of like airplane flights. No one really enjoys it. You just want to get to your destination as quickly and smoothly as possible.
Fortunately, on this day, a great-grandmother, grandmother, and their two or three-year old granddaughter walked in. Curly dark hair, dimpled cheeks, bright eyes. It didn’t take this Cutie long to figure out that she had an audience.
As she played with every potential diversion the grandmother could produce from her purse, I scanned the room. Weary eyes peaking over masks turned into compassionately joyful eyes curious about this little girl’s next moves. She had a lot of moves: jumping, singing, hiding behind the Ficus tree, testing the automatic sliding door. After each one, she glanced around the room sheepishly, knowing she had everyone’s attention.
And so it went, until they called great-grandmother back for her appointment. The people in the waiting room gave each other knowing nods and smiles and settled back in to a long mid-day’s wait.
Of all the people you see in waiting rooms, Cuties with dimpled cheeks and a penchant for performance are the best.
