People You Notice #4
She had no business being that chipper. But her persistent, upbeat aura jumpstarted my own renewed sense of joy.
In the coffee drive thru line, I listened to an audio book. Then, as I pulled up to the window, she appeared. Big mask on…complete with a goofy smile imprinted on the mask accurately representing the personality behind it. “Good morning! We’re getting your Americano ready so you can have a great day!” Her energy was undeniable. Her glee may have been a result of too much coffee for her, but what does it matter? Her joy spread faster than COVID-19.
I stop through here just often enough for her to recognize me. “Hey, we had a gentleman with Parkinson’s come through the other day and I told him about you. He said he already knows you and goes to some of the programs you guys offer!” She mentioned his name and sure enough, I do know him. These days, we see him via Zoom delivery of our programming.
She continued with this personalized pep rally…for me. Yes, I normally tip generously. Was she angling for a great tip? Or, was she just on a mission this morning?
As she handed my coffee through the window and I offered payment, she refused it. “You know what? It’s on us today. Enjoy your coffee and go spread some joy!” she blissfully demanded.
In disbelief, I thanked her and drove off having had my sense of joy jumpstarted.
