Carrying On

Sometimes the greatest proof of your capacity for resilience is that you simply carry on.

In the weeks, months, and years of greatest struggle, you rarely feel resilient. It is only upon reflection after the fact that you can take a moment to acknowledge your persistence. Often, this is prompted by another person who has witnessed parts of your experience.

Whether you feel like you have it or not, I assure you that you do.

“Resilience is an innate human capacity that can be learned and developed in anyone. All people have the ability to develop the skills that will put them on the path to resilience,” according to the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence.

So, how do you build your resilience? The ways and the tools are many, but this list from the APA points you in the right direction:

  1. Prioritize relationships. Remember, you are not alone.
    2. Join a group. Whether based on faith, support, or recreation, you need people.
    3. Take care of your body. A little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing.
    4. Practice mindfulness. Spiritual practices tend to bring calm.
    5. Avoid negative outlets.
    6. Help others. This may sound counterintuitive, but give it a try.
    7. Be proactive. What is the next right thing to do?
    8. Move toward your goals. Even small accomplishments amplify your best.
    9. Keep things in perspective. Maybe you can’t fix your situation, but you can change how your interpret and respond to it.
    10. Learn from your past. What was helpful previously?
Bonus: Seek help. Ask for a consult.
Whatever you are grappling with, remember, you can do this! You have enough for the challenges of this day, because you have the capacity for resilience.

Worth Repeating
