Taking Care of You #3
Several years ago I engaged in a guided spiritual retreat with 10-15 other people. Here, I was introduced to the Labyrinth.
Contrary to initial assumptions, it is not a maze. Rather, the Labyrinth has one way in and one way out. At times you will move very close to the center, then back out towards the outer edges. Eventually, you arrive in the middle. I usually take a moment there to face the north, east, south and west before unwinding my way back out.
The effects of a Labyrinth walk will depend significantly on your preparation and understanding. But for me, I find that it helps me notice and unwind stressors or tensions. As I arrive in the middle, I gain a profound sense of resolution and calm. You can pray prayers as you walk or simply let the experience take you where it may. Most take about 15 minutes to complete, but you can linger as long as you like. And don’t worry, you won’t get lost or confused. Just follow the path. I find that it has an effect akin to the calming and relentless waves of the ocean.
Below, you can click on the Labyrinth Locator site to find one near you. Most are found at hospitals, parks, churches and universities. Almost all are open to the public.
I regularly walk one at a hospital a few miles from my house. At first, I thought I might look silly. But, it is tucked into a discrete area not readily noticed…and anyway, there’s nothing like the joy of looking mysterious!
