Best Practices for Family Caregivers #4

Consistent and insatiable learning is a hallmark of patients and family caregivers who are optimizing their situation.

After 17 years helping my wife live well with Dermatomyositis and 15 years volunteering and leading the Parkinson Foundation of Oklahoma, I can say with complete confidence that those who know better do better. Knowing best practices comes through a regular diet of learning and engaging the latest information from trusted sources.

Good questions to pursue in your learning:

  1. What are people doing who are doing best with this condition?
  2. What are the newest developments this year?
  3. Which doctor in my area has the most expertise with this condition?
  4. Where can I find the best caregiving support?
  5. What are the next right things to do?

When you experience information overload or discouragement, take a break. Beware of the proverbial “snake oil salesman” with a magical cure. But ultimately, know that you will persist in learning on a regular basis from trusted sources. You and your loved one will do better for longer because of it.
