On Smiles #3
Sitting in a high school auditorium a few years ago, I watched as my son performed an original song…as a freshman at the school talent show. I couldn’t believe he had the guts to even enter as a 9th grader at a high school with 2500 kids, much less to own the stage and make an immediate name for himself with such an outstanding and creative performance.
In this moment (and in many other moments since), my smile could not be held back. My goofy smile beamed with pride and pure delight. I had no instruction and no guidance on my mind. It was as if my relentless smile were a spotlight focused on him, sending amazement, appreciation and support.
During the same time frame, I attended an art show by the OKC Teen Arts Council. As a member of this group, my daughter had some of her art on display. For years, I have been amazed by her creations and her attention to every artistic detail.
Again, my smile could not be held back. Directed to her work and to her beautiful spirit spilling onto the canvas, I had nothing but affirmation and admiration for her creativity. The spotlight of my smile was fully on her.
So, you understand this. When someone you love gives you reason (any reason at all) to direct the positive energy of your smile on them, you are inherently engaged in the spotlight smile. It’s not about you, but rather about them.
The impetus for such an experience may arise as you smile in amazement at someone’s sense of humor, steadfast love, or dogged determination. Anything really. Take a moment to send someone a spotlight smile.
Worth Repeating
A simple smile. That’s the start of opening your heart and being compassionate to others.
