Serendipity #2

Feeling somewhat unsettled all day, we went to the opening night of the OKC Symphony as planned for a lovely date night. As these skilled musicians mesmerized a full crowd of 2500 with Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, my agitation remained. Distracted, irritated by the rustling noises of someone seated near me, I struggled to enjoy the moment.

Then, at intermission, serendipity happened.

As I exited the concert hall for refreshments, a gentleman with severe and obvious cognitive and physical handicaps walked slowly in front of me. Nearing the line, he turned to me, smiled, and said with labored speech, “This is my favorite night of the year.”

Instantly, my irritation and guardedness disappeared. We exchanged pleasantries while my attitude went into rehab on the spot. How ridiculous for me to allow petty agitations to steer my thoughts.

Settling back in, I inhaled joy and exhaled contentment. Now in a receptive and appreciative mode, I enjoyed the music and smiled at the minor crowd noises in our section. The gentleman from intermission was also within my sight and I watched his delight as the healing sounds washed over us all.

Worth Repeating

Serendipity is the luck of finding what you weren’t looking for.
