A Better Way #1

“Discipline is the basic set of tools we require to solve life’s problems,” according to M. Scott Peck. He elaborates, “Problems do not go away. They must be worked through or else they remain, forever a barrier to the growth and development of the spirit.”

Well, that’s a cheery start. But consider, if you are grappling with any type of adversity, don’t you feel better when you take action?

To face reality requires discipline and courage, as does taking responsibility. You may not have necessarily even caused the adversity you are experiencing. Still, until you acknowledge the hard truth and take responsibility for what happens next, the problem will likely continue. Of course, some things are not problems to fix at all, but rather tensions to manage. This too takes discipline.

For instance, Kim is tired of her job. After 11 years, she recognizes that the culture has changed for the worse and she is stagnating. It’s time for a change. She has known this for some time, but the thought of change is frightening. The longer she has avoided taking action, the longer her stress has persisted. Finally, she places a call to a friend who does career coaching and her world begins to open up. Taking responsibility for her next move and summoning the discipline to make the call was the better way. The road ahead of her will require several more disciplined actions, but it always begins with one.
