Simplify #2

Creating simplicity can apply to almost every area of your life.

Initially, you may think of reducing the amount of “stuff” you have. Not everyone senses a need for this. But, if the thought of getting rid of excess clothing, piles of junk, cluttered drawers and designing a calming, serene space appeals to you, check out Minimalism or other books in that genre for a guide. Here, you will learn how to isolate a space such as your desk or a specific drawer, empty it and only put back things you want there. Everything else can be stored elsewhere, donated or trashed.

You can also simplify your time, obligations, email inbox, diet, leisure activities and work. Here’s a principle from Leo Babauta to move from:

  1. Identify the essential.
  2. Eliminate the rest.

For instance, if you are overwhelmed with work tasks and projects, try this.

  1. Make a list of all of the projects you need to do.
  2. Choose 3 to go on your simple projects list. Leave all of the others in your “on deck” project list.
  3. Make a list of the tasks necessary to complete only these 3 simple projects.
  4. Each day, make a list of your 3 most important tasks related to the 3 simple projects.
  5. Execute those tasks each day until you have completed all 3 simple projects. Then, choose 3 new projects.

This process harnesses the power of focus to get results faster.

The answers to how to simplify go far beyond the scope of this one blog post, but experiment with the principles and steps above. You can simplify your life.

Worth Repeating

We crave simplicity not because we are simple, but because we are drowning in complexity.
