Facing Fears #2

You may think that other people have no fears. In that, you would most likely be wrong. Even your heroes have certain fears and hesitations and avoidances. But, they find ways forward anyway.

Things people fear:

…Asking the question
…Trying new technology
…Admitting they don’t know something
…What might happen next
…Failure at a project
…Success at a project
…Conflict
And the list could go on for days.

When we think about our fears, we tend to project the worst that could happen and assume that this is the only way the situation would unfold. Not necessarily. Talk yourself down. Reframe those perilous thoughts. For instance, you might be telling yourself, “If I try this new technology, I will mess it up and look inept.” Instead, reframe to remind yourself, “I can do this. I have learned many new things in my life and I may have to ask questions, but I can figure this out.”

Or, chunk it down into smaller parts. Sometimes we generate fear because we think we have to do it all at once. What one thing can you do next to move in a positive direction?

What is your one fear? Sure, you may have many. But identify one. Name it. When you name it, you force it out into the light, where it may begin to wither.

Why is this a fear?
How are you perpetuating the fear?
Who has dealt with something like this before? Could a consult with them be helpful?
What one positive step could you take to move in the right direction?

We all have fears. But, don’t allow your fears to have too much power over you. The process may take a while, but determine that you will find a way to face your fears. You can do this!
