Noticing #2
At our OKC Parkinson’s Walk each year, I am the emcee and DJ. I love it!
One of my favorite parts happens as I switch from country to current hits to classic sing-alongs and observe who starts moving to which music. It’s uncanny. Every year the same phenomenon occurs.
With newer dance music, the young give each other a knowing glance and start gyrating to the beat with the latest innovative moves. Throw some late 70’s, early 80’s music on and the moms of that era are transported back to another time and place, giggling with freedom. Lay down some Johnny Cash or other country tunes, and grown men with ample bellies bop their heads and spring into line dances.
Parkinson’s is tough. The disease causes movement to become more difficult. But, Parkinson’s is no match for dance music as scores of patients defy their condition and groove to the tunes.
In these moments of joy, I’m just thankful to observe the transcendent nature of dance.
Worth Repeating
