Friendship #1

As I waited for the group to begin, I watched and listened. People laughed and poked fun at each other. They inquired about each other’s well being, and sent well wishes back and forth.

Obviously, they enjoyed each other’s company and needed it. So, it got me to thinking about being a better friend. Here are three ideas that I’m working on and suggest for your consideration:

  1. Be there. In good times and bad, be there. Sure, you don’t always know what to say, but your presence may speak louder than words.
  2. Give and Take. “One way” friendships are no good. They don’t last very long either. Be sure you ask about their interests and well being, rather than just talking about your own. Try to improve their life. Be helpful.
  3. Tell the truth. Resist the inclination to fake it. Encourage a gracious transparency and model it first. True, this makes you vulnerable. So be wise. But, speak the truth.

Worth Repeating

A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.
