Mastering the Art of…#3

“I haven’t got the slightest idea how to change people, but still I keep a long list of prospective candidates just in case I should ever figure it out,” comments comedian David Sedaris.

Mastering the art of crucial conversations is a lifelong process. Difficult and conflictual situations will always be daunting. But, we can learn to do better for our part. These ideas from the book, Crucial Conversations, may help:

Start with Heart: Focus on what you really want and clarify your motives before speaking.

Make it Safe: Create an environment where others feel safe to share their opinions, even when they disagree.

Master My Story: Separate facts from the stories you tell yourself to avoid emotional reactions.

State My Path: Clearly and respectfully state your views, while also inviting others to share theirs.

Explore Other’s Path: Actively listen to understand the other person’s perspective, even if you disagree.

Move to Action: Turn the conversation into a clear plan for action and results.

Each of these suggestions requires significant preparation. But we all start somewhere. Today could be the day that you begin to master the art of crucial conversations.

Worth Repeating

I believe that the measure of my soul is my capacity to love imperfect people.
