Last week, our family travelled to Sedona, Arizona, a strikingly beautiful spot in the world. My daughter and I had a solid plan for sights to see, restaurants to try and experiences to enjoy.
While the things we planned were fantastic, we once again found great joy in the unexpected serendipities of the road. For instance…
- On the day we went to see the Grand Canyon, we were delighted to discover that at least a quarter of the people spoke other languages. We even played a game trying to guess the languages we heard and the countries they might call home.
- On our way back from the Grand Canyon, we stopped in Williams, AZ for pie at the Pine Country Restaurant. As they say, “All pie is good pie.” Williams, AZ did not disappoint.
- In downtown Sedona, we stumbled upon a Mead tasting. Harkening back to Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales, we sipped a variety of offerings and had the best time.
- One day while everyone else shopped, I climbed Humphreys Peak. At 12,633 feet, it is the high point of Arizona. Along the trail, I hiked with interesting people from D.C, Philadelphia and Phoenix.
Clearly, I could go on, but whether you get out for a long drive, an overnight getaway or a full-fledged vacation, keep your eyes open for the unexpected serendipities of the road.
