She always approached with a smile and a sense of excitement. I never dreaded our meetings, because even when discussing areas for improvement, she conveyed supreme trust that I could make those improvements.
I loved the work anyway, as the Caregiver Fundamentals Coordinator at Sunbeam Family Services in Oklahoma City several years ago. In this role, I got to learn about family caregiving, meet hundreds of patients and caregivers, do seminars, lead support groups, and more.
But a great boss really makes a difference.
Diane Hanold believed in me, and this made me want to do my best. With a flair for the goofy and an endless supply of hope, she inspired me and made me smarter and more effective.
Yesterday, as I attended a leadership conference, I heard from Liz Wiseman about multipliers and diminishers and my thoughts immediately went to Diane Hanold. Now, I have had many good bosses, and hopefully I have been a pretty good boss as well. But she really stands out.
So, are you a multiplier or a diminisher? Do you bring out the best in the people around you? Do you multiply the intelligence of the people with whom you work?
Or, who has been your best boss ever? Have you thanked them for that?
Worth Repeating
A multiplier believes everyone is smart and that they can figure it out.
