The cold air had numbed my face. Dry grass crunched underneath my step. Perfect conditions for a morning of reflection.

With the Washita River down to a trickle, I ambled slowly around the Washita National Battleground near Cheyenne, Oklahoma, considering the seemingly unnecessary carnage that took place on this very ground over 100 years ago.

From above, I heard Canadian Geese approaching. Positioning myself on a ridge with an expansive view, I witnessed 700-1000 of these interdependent creatures soaring in massive V formations. Sure enough, some flapped hard near the front, but soon switched positions to fly with less wind resistance near the back of the V.

What am I supposed to learn from this, I wondered? Never before have I seen this many Canadian Geese at one time. No sooner had I asked this question, than I realized the power of “getting by with a little help from your friends.”

The examples are many: comforting a grieving friend, receiving wise business advice, encouraging someone to do their best, eating breakfast together, praying together, golfing together, travelling, fishing, shopping, laughing, crying, and ranting together.

Just like those Canadian Geese, we get by with a little help from our friends.
