Fresh Air
With the backyard grass freshly mowed by my teenage son, I slip off my flip flops and sink my bare feet into the cool, plush lawn. Due to an unusually cool and wet August, the yard has retained its deep, verdant, inviting hue. The familiar yet always energizing smell invigorates my nostrils. And the many sensations that run through my feet take me to places I want to be. Namely, here.
Barefoot in the grass.
According to Dr. Sam Oltman, “When we are barefoot, we receive a massive amount of sensory feedback from our feet—far more than when we are in overly-supportive and overly-cushioned shoes. We receive increased information from the foot about its position in space, the texture of the ground and muscle tension. Being barefoot on the beach, in the grass or on the rocks of a riverbed is immensely pleasurable and provides additional physiological benefits too.”
Indeed. I do this multiple times during warm weather. It reminds me to be grateful for the rain and a private back yard. But, the mere experience sends good vibes shooting through my body and mind.
So, when is the last time you slipped your shoes off and walked barefoot in the grass? Give it a try. You’ll be glad you did.

The dirtier the feet, the happier the heart.
