Resilient Life #4

As you step into the groove of resilience, you may be shocked to find yourself serving again. You will not sit back, self-satisfied that you made it, hoping you never face another challenge. Rather, you will live the dream that puts you back in the battle. You will help other people once more!

The interesting thing about embracing your capacity for resilience and helping others again is that after a crash, we identify so much better and so much more humbly with people. We move on from an “us serving them” mentality, to a higher, clearer vision of solidarity with all people. We have been to the bottom, so we’re not so afraid to spend time with other people who have bottomed out.

One day, I listened as a college student talked about being in a position of service, when she encountered a girl her own age whose life had taken a turn for more difficult circumstances and choices. I was so inspired by the mindset I heard, when this college student remarked, “You know, she’s a girl just like me, with dreams just like me.”

Resilient people don’t look down on others for needing help, because resilient people are in touch with their own struggles. Therefore, they look people in the eyes and offer hope.

Other people aren’t so scary. They’re just like you, trying to find their way. You can help with that. You can provide pivotal help for someone else who is mired in adversity. Your primary credibility comes as you share the adversity you’ve encountered, and use it to offer hope.

Greatness is not measured by how much you take, but by how much you give.
