Words to Live Into #3

When the crazy makers barge into your world or unforeseen problems wreak havoc, remember, you have the capacity to proceed with unflappable calm. You can learn to keep your cool in a crisis.

I know you can, because sometimes I can too. And sometimes…maybe not.

It is so easy to default to responses driven by emotional overload because you experience emotional overload. Too much crisis drains your tank, which is the reason to intentionally fill your tank multiple times per day.

What if you begin to visualize a likely problem? In this visualization, you see yourself flipping a switch to cognitive calm, rather than giving full vent to an emotional outburst? As you step back to analyze the situation, you recognize the truths of the circumstances, seeing what is helpful and what is entirely unhelpful. As you hold your tongue, you may listen, watch, ignore, count to 100, or utilize any of a myriad of tools to keep your cool.

When you can cut to the pulse of the problem and exercise objective and loving responses, you are becoming unflappable. You are not attempting to become stoic or uncaring, but rather in control of your responses. Maintaining perspective, staying centered, and refusing to personalize the situation, you rise above the chaos of the moment.

Worth Repeating

Panic causes tunnel vision. Calm acceptance of danger allows us to more easily assess the situation and see the options.
