Effort #2

When difficult circumstances flood around you, clarity and success may seem elusive.  To take back control, consider these 5 keys to tapping your inner grit:

1. Put your finger on the problem.  At 3:00 a.m. with worries swirling amidst your attempts to get back to sleep, all issues seem slippery. I recommend that you get up and write down a list of what is bugging you. Identifying and naming your problem causes the swirling to cease and moves you in the right direction.

2. Chunk it down. Often, the problem is not just one, but many.  Easily, we can become overwhelmed. So, chunk it down into what needs to be done in phase one, two and three, or focus only on what you can tackle today.

3. Take action.  Identify the first thing and do it. Feelings of depression and anxiety are at least altered when you take action. What can you do right now to move towards a solution? Remember, a little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing.

4. Make the ask. One of these early actions may involve asking someone else to weigh in, consult, or do something you can’t do. Is it time to schedule an appointment with someone who has the expertise to guide you at a much deeper level than these brief suggestions? Who do you need to ask?

5. Remind yourself that you CAN do the next right thing. You have enough energy, peace, love, etc. to do the next right thing. You have the capacity for resilience and you have the grit to do one thing. You can’t do 172 tasks related to a move right now. But, you can take action on the first one!

These certainly aren’t the only five measures to tapping your inner grit, but these five will get you moving. Whatever you are facing or whatever challenge is plaguing you, I encourage you to tap your inner grit as you live through it!
