Compassion #2
Past the fear, past the anger,
Past the words, theirs and mine,
I see this one person.
Beyond conservative, liberal or confused,
Beyond the horror, expressed in good ways and bad,
I see into the eyes of this one person.
More than color or clothing style,
More than education level or financial status,
I see the face of one person.
One person, just like me,
One person, trying to figure it all out,
One person, with hopes and dreams.
I can never fully understand how they got here,
I can never truly know what it means to live in their shoes,
But I am here, looking in the eyes of one person.
I find this one person in every crowd,
The ones I frequent and the ones I don’t,
I see this one person.
And my anger gives way to clearer thought,
Position fades as connection grows,
Being understood turns into the attempt to understand.
My sense of humanity begins again,
Love re-emerges to win the day,
Because I see this one person.
Worth Repeating
Ethics is nothing else than reverence for life.
