Crucial Concepts #2
Where are you going? How do you wish to experience this goal? Can you see yourself overcoming likely obstacles? What is your exit strategy?
Envision your destination. No matter what sort of endeavor you choose, this proves to be helpful advice. Whether you are thinking of a volunteer fundraising project, a garden, a work campaign or an event, you would do well to think about the finish line.
There have been many iterations of this idea, but perhaps no one has articulated it better than Stephen Covey in the late 80’s with, “Begin with the end in mind.” This notion helps you clarify what it means to succeed. It gives you compass for the way forward and a goal from which to build strategic milestones.
Michael Phelps’ swim coach told him thousands of times during his training to “play the tape.” By this, he meant to visualize the perfect race. Before practice, after practice, before bed, he conditioned himself to visualize success. And it worked…many times.
Whatever your next endeavor whether great or small, envision your destination.
Worth Repeating
