Crucial Concepts #4
In what area of your life do you need to take responsibility to create new outcomes?
Often, the notion of responsibility gets tangled up with blame, fault, guilt, etc. But, take a moment to consider a better understanding of responsibility.
Leaders take responsibility. When the team misses the mark, there are reasons. Rather than getting lost in finger pointing and despair, the leader helps them create and execute a better plan from this day forward.
Or, perhaps you have bungled your finances. Clearly, there are reasons and most of it may even be your fault. You have learned what not to do. Now, you have the opportunity to take responsibility, define reality and move forward with an improved strategy.
If you or your loved one are living with a chronic condition, it is not necessarily your fault. Sure, you could dig into why this has happened, and maybe you would even come to correct conclusions. Guilt and blame are not very useful in these scenarios. What really matters is that you take responsibility for what you do from this day forward. You may not be able to fix, but you can be smart about how you manage it.
To take responsibility does not mean that everything goes perfectly. So, avoid getting lost in the blame game. Within your current reality, what are the right things to do? Take action. You are probably already taking more responsibility than you might think.
