Try Something New #1
If your life has begun to feel like the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day or the Andy Samberg movie Palm Springs, it’s time to shock your system. In these movies, the main characters are stuck in a time-loop in which every day is the same day over and over. Exploring themes of monotony and finding meaning in life, these movies challenge us to move away from hopelessness and toward intentional living.
Need a shock? It’s good for your neuroplasticity and mood. Here are some things I’ve done and am doing:
- Going to a new breakfast restaurant. Looking around, the clientele was 95%+ millennials.
- Brushing my teeth with my left hand (weak hand) while standing on one leg. This is tougher than it sounds.
- Learning a new dance move. Social media is full of step by step tutortials.
- Listening to new music.
- Sitting at a different table with different people.
I created a list of about 30 new things to shock my system. As I do these, I have a palpable sense of discomfort to begin. But so far, all are ending with delight. What would be on your list?

Your life does not get better by chance; it gets better by change.
