Hiking in the woods after a soaking rain at Robbers Cave State Park near Wilburton, OK, I listened.

Raindrops melodically plinked and dripped from the leaves onto the leaf covered forest floor. In the distance, a woodpecker drilled away. A symphony of birds sang calmly, with refreshing tones and lower volume than their typical morning songs.

No wind. No human voices. No whirrs of machinery. Just these refreshing natural sounds of raindrops and feathered friends to accompany my footsteps on the trail.

On the other side of Lost Lake, I climbed on top of an old spring house probably built about 90 years ago.

My world gets loud. Voices behind the emails, voices in meetings, tv, radio, words, words, words. Some angry, some deceptive, some friendly, some desperate, and some joyous.

At least once a month, I need the silence…that curative gift that renews my soul. And on this day, I found it in the still after the rain.

Worth Repeating

Silence is the sleep that nourishes wisdom.
